Personally, I recommend reading them for the first time in publication order. While it is interesting to read them in chronological order (as recent sets order them) I don't see much point in reading about the creation of a world you know nothing about yet and don't really care about yet. If reading in publication order, you grow to understand the world, its characters, and Aslan, so by the time you get to 'The Magician's Nephew' and see the creation it makes much more of an impact. Plus, if it were really chronological order, you should stop reading during the end of 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardobe' to read 'A Horse and His Boy' then finish reading 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardobe'. Which is silly for a first-time reader, but fun to do after multiple readings. But that's just my humble opinion ;-)
